Eclipse is a Java tool, free and open source software built by an open community of tool providers.The eclipse platform provides tool developers with ultimate flexibility and control over their software technology.Eclipse is mainly written in java by use of the various plug-ins in other software language such as COBOL, PHP, Perl, C, C++, Python etc.

Latest release is Galileo with 3.5 platform version at 24 June 2009 for Galileo projects.

You can look up the commercial and open source plugins for Eclipse available at http://www.eclipse.org/community/plugins.html.

You can get started Eclipse by download the SDk of the latest release version from http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/. Be sure to have at least JDK/JRE 1.4 on your desktop. If you want to stay on the cutting edge, you can download the “stable” build which typically has additional bug fixes and features, but it hasn’t been graded production-quality yet.
